Gerhard on Google Street View

A couple of months ago, as I was stepping out of the house to get the mail, I saw a Google Street View car drive down our street. Little did I know that I would feature quite prominently in the photos of our house. Really, what are the odds?

The photos of our neighborhood are now up on Google Maps. Here are some screen captures.

In the first photo, I’m just a small blob.

I’m a little bigger in the second photo.

Now you can spot me quite easily.

This might be my proverbial 15 minutes of fame. It may even last a year or two—or however long it’ll take Google to come by again. It might be a while though; our street clearly doesn’t offer this level of excitement.

While we’re at it, let’s take a look at the desert bed along the fence.

Looking good from across the street!

  1. Google street view has cars? Now I feel really dumb! Nice accident!

    1. They must have a whole fleet of them.

They also have camera rigs for backpacks, snowmobiles, and trikes! How cool is that?

  2. I was featured in our old street view images, thankfully those are gone now!

    1. Still, the odds of me being out there at the right time are so slim...

    1. That's what I thought. I'm glad I took screenshots of the previous round of Google Street View images (see here).

  4. Happened to me at my old place too! They haven't been updated yet either. Cheers to 15 minutes of Google Maps fame.

    1. LOL, how funny is that. There must be something about the Google cars that gets people to step out into the street--like the Pied Piper!

  5. That is pretty cool! I should save some screenshots, too. The current street view images of my place are from May 2011. I've taken photos of my own but these wider images capture the impact of tree removals at neighboring properties in a way that surprises me.

    1. You should! You never know when Google will update the images.

I agree about the wide-angle views. They do make everything look just a little off, in an intriguing way.

  6. Not too surprising that gardeners are being caught by Google cameras. What is surprising is that you don't seem to be gardening at all in those photos... Fun though! :)

    1. LOL, I wander how many gardeners have been photographed gardening by Google Street View cameras. In fact, I wish I *had* been gardening; that would be have been much more memorable than merely getting the mail.

    1. If only I'd known they were coming, I could have been waiting for them in the driveway wearing a bunny suit!

  8. That is funny! Your garden looks good! I have seen the google street view truck driving around here, but our street is gated so no view of my aloes and agaves.

    1. I wonder if they'd enter if the gate were open? Would love to see a Google Street View of your plants!

  9. Very cool! The desert bed looks awesome. Street views of my rental are from 2012, and show a bare patio and a sickly-looking Xylosma congestum (now huge and happy). Should take a screen grab for documentation...
