Succulent close-ups at home

Lately I’ve been focused too much on the ugly side of summer. But when you ignore the dried up plants and the brown grass and look closer, there’s plenty of beauty to be found. To see what I mean, check out these succulent close-ups I took around the garden in the past week.

  3. Wonderful photo essay Gerhard. Thank god for cactus and succulents in August !

  4. There's so much beauty there Gerhard! I can imagine all of them too as large prints hanging on the walls of a large contemporary style home :)

    1. Thank you for the compliments! I've been thinking of setting up an online store where people could buy prints of my best images. That would be a nice way to make some money to buy more plants or go on more trips.

  5. Wonderful photos. Off-hand, I can't say how much of our 1/2 acre lot is already dedicated to succulents but I expect more and more is headed that way. Rather than give up my slope (i.e stop watering it entirely), I may convert more of it to succulents in the coming year.

    1. The white stuff on the spider web encasing these aeoniums is ash from a wildfire nearby, which fortunately has been put on now.

    1. I did. Plus I bought a nice agave on the weekend, which also helped soothe my frayed nerves.

  8. Love all of these, but my favorite is the first Euphorbia polygona ‘Snowflake’ image. So nice!

    1. Those little protruding thingies in that photo look funny, don't they? They're the dried up flowers (cyathia) from earlier this year.

  9. Beautiful. The Starr hybrid--oooh la la!

    1. Greg Starr is looking into having this hybrid tissue-cultured since so many people are asking about it. I have two plants, and if either of them pups, I'll save one for you.

  10. Gorgeous! You've found the beauty among the brown!

    1. It's easier with close-up because you automatically exclude the not so nice stuff around it.
