Desert Botanical Garden—evening walk (May 2021)

Even though I only spent one night in Phoenix, Arizona a couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to visit the Desert Botanical Garden twice: in the evening of Tuesday, May 18, and again the following morning. (The DBG typically closes at 5:00 pm, but I was lucky enough to be in town on a day when they had extended hours.)

I love the long shadows and the dramatic backlighting common to both evening and morning, but other than that, the garden looks distinctly different. This is a collection of photos I took on Tuesday evening. In my next post, you'll see some of the same scenes in the morning light.

This opuntia bed near the entrance is always good for a great photo

The teddy bear chollas (Cylindropuntia bigelovii) are spectacular when backlit

Ferocactus pringlei

Palo blanco (Mariosousa willardiana) and senita (Pachycereus schottii)

Creeping devil (Stenocereus eruca)

Advance reservations are still required for the Desert Botanical Garden, but I was able to get the time slots I wanted on short notice.

  2. Gorgeous shots. So glad you were able to visit the garden so we can experience it vicariously through you. The garden looks fabulous so it obviously didn't suffer during the pandemic. Thanks for the great tour.
