San Diego still succs

Day 2 in San Diego, and the succy sights simply won't end. Wherever we go, there are spiky plants that want to be boss.

It starts right at our hotel:

This is enough to drive fear into anybody's heart!

Agave americana

Even the logo of our hotel has an agave in it!

You'd think you could tour the campus of a prestigious institution of higher learning like UC San Diego in peace, but no, there are these succy monstrosities again!

At least the Pop-Up Park features less belligerent plants:

Imagine driving along the coast in La Jolla and seeing this thing towering above the ocean—like it owned the place!

But it gets worse. There's this inverted umbrella of torment right in front of somebody's house!

Furcraea selloa 'Marginata'

Furcraea selloa 'Marginata'

At least these succy plants can't inflict too much harm:

Here is proof that San Diego's coastline is truly ghastly. So much hideosity makes my eyes hurt!

Don't people have anything better to do?

This is no place for child's play!

The riders of these bicycles probably ran away in horror when they saw this hellish sight.

It's exhausting to chronicle all these affronts to good taste so I'll let the pictures do the talking.

Furcraea foetida 'Variegata'

Kalanchoe beharensis

Agave attenuata 'Variegata'

Euphorbia ammak 'Variegata' (left) and Euphorbia ingens (right)

More euphorbias

A palate cleanser to end this succy post

I have to get out of here soon. I don't know how much more of this I can take!

  3. Okay, that front-yard Furcraea WAS a little scary. And those rattan chairs looked like they were assembled in unholy worship of the Agave attentuata so maybe there is a sinister side to San Diego.

P.S. My nephew attends UCSD, as did his father before him - it's a great school.

  4. So good of you to document all that awfulness and warn us all!

  5. Better and more plant nurseries and garden centers in San Diego. So, San Diego.

  7. How do they get so many of those Agave attenuata to bloom in tandem? Mass planting I guess... Do they pup much?
