Preview: Agaves in our garden (2022 edition)

I'm working on a comprehensive survey of all the agaves in our garden, both in the ground and in pots. Some of the larger ones have either flowered recently (Agave parrasana) or been removed (Agave weberi ‘Arizona Star’ and Agave ‘Crazy Horse’), but I've planted quite a few others so there's a lot of ground to cover.

It'll be a little while yet before my 2022 agave report will be ready. To tide you over, here are some agaves that caught my eye today:

Agave bovicornuta (with Euphorbia tirucalli ‘Sticks on Fire’ on the left)

Agave applanata ‘Cream Spike’ (with Ferocactus emoryi on the left, Ferocactus pilosus on the right)

Agave titanota, from seed collected at the type locality

Agave titanota ‘Lion's Mane’, an Altman introduction sold at Home Depot, of all places

Agave xylonacantha

Agave shrevei var. matapensis × guadalajarana

Agave victoriae-reginae ‘Himesanoyuki’, a dwarf form from the Huntington's International Succulent Introduction program

Agave pintilla beginning to show its signature markings

Agave ‘Chocolate Edge’ (A. mitis hybrid), just planted

Agave zebra is sloooow

Agave gentryi ‘Jaws’ is getting big

Agave ‘Ripple Effect’ (variegated sport of A. ‘Mr. Ripple’)

Agave americana ‘Mediopicta Alba’ (in front of Yucca rostrata ‘Sapphire Skies’)

If you have an agave itch that needs scratching, I can highly recommend Jeremy Spath and Jeff Moore's new book, Agaves: Species, Cultivars & Hybrids:

Featuring over 2,000 photos of agaves in habitat and cultivation, this 350-page book is the new go-to reference on the genus. Find out more in my review here.

Jeff Moore, the co-author and publisher of this book and owner of Solana Succulents, will give a free Zoom presentation about agaves (and the new book) for the Sacramento Cactus & Succulent Society (SCSS) on Monday, February 28, 2022 at 7:00 pm Pacific Time. Anybody is welcome to join; you don't need to be a member. The Zoom link will be posted on the SCSS website and Facebook page a few days before the event.

  1. Sexy agave photos are always a good start to the day! I was asked recently to do an "agave report" like I have in years past (it's been awhile). Perhaps I need to get to work...

    1. YESSSS!

After all, 2022 is the Year of the Agave. And if itsn't, it should be. Like every year.

  2. Is '22 the Year of the Agave? Is that a tequila marketing thing?

I was going to do an agave survey too, to go along with the aloe survey--many many less agaves than aloes species-wise, so it will be easier!
