Lots of mangaves and other cool plants at the 10/19/21 UC Davis Arboretum plant sale

Friends and fellow gardeners often ask me where they can find a good selection of mangaves. Typically, I refer them to online sources, although the various Green Acres locations in the Sacramento area usually have a handful of varieties in stock. In addition, Peacock Horticultural Nursery in Sebastopol makes a concerted effort to carry as many mangaves as they can.

Today, I can add another source, one right here in Davis: The inventory for the UC Davis Arboretum's fall plant sale opening on October 19, 2021 lists 17 different varieties from Walters Gardens' Mad About Mangave® Collection:

  • ×Hansara 'Jumping Jacks'
  • ×Mangave 'Aztec King'
  • ×Mangave 'Black Magic'
  • ×Mangave 'Blazing Saddles'
  • ×Mangave 'Center of Attention'
  • ×Mangave 'Frosted Elegance'
  • ×Mangave 'Inkblot'
  • ×Mangave 'Man of Steel'
  • ×Mangave 'Mission to Mars'
  • ×Mangave 'Moonglow'
  • ×Mangave 'Painted Desert'
  • ×Mangave 'Purple People Eater'
  • ×Mangave 'Racing Stripes'
  • ×Mangave 'Snow Leopard'
  • ×Mangave 'Sponge Paint'
  • Manfreda 'Cherry Chocolate Chip'
  • Manfreda 'Mint Chocolate Chip'

Some are available in 4" for $7.50, others in 3" for $6.00. (UC Davis Arboretum members receive 10% off.)

In total, the inventory (PDF | Excel) for the October 19, 2021 sale contains 589 entries ranging from Abutilon 'Patio Lantern Passion' to Zephyranthes candida (Argentine rain lily). No matter what your garden style is, you'll find something you need to have. I speak from experience!

My shopping list, a bit on the conservative side this time, currently includes the following:

  • Acacia chinchillensis
  • Agave schidigera 'Royal Flush'
  • Coreopsis gigantea
  • Echinacea purpurea 'Magnus Superior'
  • Linum lewisii
  • Passiflora edulis 'Possum Purple'
  • Penstemon heterophyllus 'Electric Blue'
  • Perityle incana

The fall sale will be online only. It opens to UC Davis Arboretum members on Tuesday, October 19, 10:00 a.m., and to the general public on Friday, October 22, 10:00 a.m.

Plants must be picked up at the UC Davis Teaching Nursery between October 26 and November 13. After you place your order, you have the opportunity to select your preferred time slot.

To get the link for the online store, you must be a subscriber to the UC Davis Arboretum email newsletter (you can sign up here).

I think this covers all the essentials, but check the plant sale page for complete information.

  1. I've bought most of my Mangaves at Davis plant sales, and even though I swore I wasn't going to buy anymore until after this winter I of course caved and added a couple to my list for the sale.

  2. Be warned that passion flowers sucker like nobody's business, once they get established....
