Great succulent selection at Green Acres Nursery in Sacramento (Elk Grove)

I'm often asked for recommendations on where to buy succulents in the Sacramento area. I used to tell people to drive to Walnut Creek to shop at the Ruth Bancroft Garden Nursery, or to go to Poot's Cactus Nursery in Ripon. Both are about an hour away, and they are still excellent choices.

But things are improving in Sacramento, too. Case in point: Green Acres Nursery & Supply, a locally owned chain of garden centers. I was at their Elk Grove store a few days ago, and I was pleasantly surprised by their selection of succulents. Not just the usual soft-leaved succulents in 2- and 3-inch pots—they always have those—but choice plants, including many agaves not often seen in general nurseries.

Here are some photos I snapped on my cell phone to illustrate what I mean:

Agaves & co.

Agave ocahui

Agave ocahui

Agave ismenthis

Agave pygmae 'Dragon Toes'

Agave pygmae 'Dragon Toes'

Agave ovatifolia 'Vanzie'

Mangave 'Barney'

Agave weberi 'Arizona Star'

Mangave 'Navajo Princess', and Agave pablocarrilloi (still labeled gypsophila) behind it

Mangave 'Navajo Princess'

Agave applanata 'Cream Spike'

Agave 'Green Glow' and Agave 'Blue Glow'

Agave 'Green Glow'

Aloe 'Night Sky'

Hylotelephium spectabile 'Autumn Charm'

Senecio ficoides 'Skyscraper'

Agave ocahui and Mangave 'Barney' in a demonstration planting

These are the usual small cacti (all Mammillaria, I believe), but I'd never seen them arranged like this—nice effect en masse!

Dragon tree (Dracaena draco) in a 24-inch box for a cool $500

A big selection in the outside area as well:

Agave titanota 'White Ice'

Agave guiengola 'Creme Brulee'

Mangave 'Navajo Princess'

Mangave 'Lavender Lady'

Mangave 'Tooth Fairy'

Mangave 'Purple People Eater' and Mangave 'Tooth Fairy'

Muchos mangaves

Mangave 'Spotty Dotty'

Yucca rostrata

Yucca rigida

Nothing makes me happier than to see the selection of succulents improving so much in local nurseries. Kudos to Green Acres for stepping up!

  1. Looks like you should be able to find plenty to tempt you local -- and speaking of which, I'm back in town in time for the InterCity show and have a reservation for Friday at noon! Hope to bump into you.

  2. Always good to find a source like that close to home. Mangaves definitely seem to have come out of the closet with greater availability, although I can't say that my closest garden center has gotten the word yet.

  3. Looks like a good place to shop.

I won't make the InterCity show after all. Next year, hopefully. Looking forward to your posts on it.

  4. An awesome selection of plants. The resurgence in gardening and houseplants due to pandemic has been one of the few benefits. So many unusual plants starting to show up. It's exciting but so little space to overwinter all the tender choices.

  5. Always great when there’s another good nursery to add to an established list. And all those fine plants, wow!
