I'll be presenting Foliage First - the CA Edition, demonstrating and explaining these design principles with ideas using lots of your local plant flavors. May 8th at the San Diego Hort Society and May 12th at Laguna Beach GC.Karen Chapmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00624854884893730364noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1615100786320943903.post-43756549427372424622017-01-09T11:42:41.815-08:002017-01-09T11:42:41.815-08:00That's it exactly. Cannas and bananas grow like crazy in our heat as long as they get tons of water. What's tricky is finding a balance between wishful thinking and reality :-).Gerhard Bock (Succulents and More)https://www.blogger.com/profile/17583583634141549759noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1615100786320943903.post-74711625373036066442017-01-09T11:40:18.097-08:002017-01-09T11:40:18.097-08:00I do agree with that. I love the lush tapestries I've seen in the PNW and would love to recreate them using plants better suited for our climate. But that's a topic for another book.Gerhard Bock (Succulents and More)https://www.blogger.com/profile/17583583634141549759noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1615100786320943903.post-60623275634190386962017-01-09T11:38:01.035-08:002017-01-09T11:38:01.035-08:00What we need is a book or web site that provides a...What we need is a book or web site that provides a substitution guide. Something like "If your summers are too hot for Heuchera, try these plants instead," etc.Gerhard Bock (Succulents and More)https://www.blogger.com/profile/17583583634141549759noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1615100786320943903.post-22691650709032088162017-01-08T20:08:47.691-08:002017-01-08T20:08:47.691-08:00I've ordered the book, although, based on the ...I've ordered the book, although, based on the authors' "Fine Foliage" blog, I anticipated what you confirmed here that the focus would be on plants more well-suited to the PNW than SoCal. Still, I expect I can find inspiration in the manner in which their plant combinations are put together. The challenge then becomes locating drought and heat tolerant substitutes.Kris Petersonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07097260283693156795noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1615100786320943903.post-69515860004939185022017-01-08T19:57:48.450-08:002017-01-08T19:57:48.450-08:00Don't you ultimately feel that way about most ...Don't you ultimately feel that way about most blogs or books on the rest of the country? California and the Southwest are such distinctive climates that really are a different sort of gardening. The differences are so great, I find my inspiration coming more from desert or tropical/subtropical or other Mediterranean climate gardeners.David in Berkeleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07429998034808702327noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1615100786320943903.post-75267844422481734272017-01-08T15:04:11.193-08:002017-01-08T15:04:11.193-08:00Good point about the plant palette--might be appli...Good point about the plant palette--might be applicable to more of the US than the PNW, but Mediterranean is a whole other thing.
