There's even an more minimalist space at the Portland Japanese Garden called the "Sand and Stone Garden" (see http://www.twip.org/photo/2008/photo-14-12-08-04-23-18.jpg for a good photo). People could very easily step into the sand in both gardens, but maybe the prevailing atmosphere of serenity, awe and respect prevents that.Gerhard Bock (Succulents and More)https://www.blogger.com/profile/17583583634141549759noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1615100786320943903.post-1620756937996090842011-01-07T07:52:36.302-08:002011-01-07T07:52:36.302-08:00Beautiful! I like to imagine that visitors are so awed by the garden that they respect it enough not to damage anything, though.Appalachian Feethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10565166088691325412noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1615100786320943903.post-46850093195189914112011-01-07T07:30:15.487-08:002011-01-07T07:30:15.487-08:00Mark and Gaz, I've been interested in Japanese...Mark and Gaz, I've been interested in Japanese gardens for a while now and was so happy to finally get to visit the Portland Japanese Garden. I find the Japanese gardening philosophy very fascinating as well. Just like the Japanese, I want my garden to be a refuge from the busy world outside, and I do exert full control over what gets planted where, how its shaped, etc. This aspect of control over nature is easy to understand for hobby gardeners.

Alan, people has asked me before what kind of a garden we have. I always say "eclectic" because it borrows from many different gardening styles, climates and geographical areas. In my mind, that's the only way you can create a truly personal garden space.Gerhard Bock (Succulents and More)https://www.blogger.com/profile/17583583634141549759noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1615100786320943903.post-75681861117001554602011-01-07T05:50:44.837-08:002011-01-07T05:50:44.837-08:00There are so many great design elements and wonder...There are so many great design elements and wonderful details in well-done Japanese gardens. Even though I'll probably never have one of my own, I definitely have and will continue to borrow some of their ideas.

I especially love the wood - granite - tree image -- what a great idea!
