Paradise, here we come!

After a wait that seemed to last forever, summer vacation is finally here! Guess where we’ll be traveling this year?

I’ll be blogging every day from Destination X, starting Monday evening, so check back regularly.

In the meantime, click here to read my posts from last year’s trip through the American Southwest—Grand Canyon, Tucson, Santa Fe, Mesa Verde, Arches and lots of other places in between, not to mention plenty of photos of cactus, agaves and other plants.

    1. Wow, impressive! You must have been to Maui before to recognize the island from a satellite image :-).

    2. No, I've not been to Maui, but my first thought was Hawaii -- just wasn't sure what island. So checked a map. :)

Don't spend all of your time looking at the land -- there's lots to see under the water too!

  4. There's several botanical gardens on Maui, Gerhard. We expect pictures, of course. Sue

    1. Sue, I'll take a day and visit as many of them as I can without the family. They'll be happy hanging out on the beach without me.

  5. We really enjoyed Maui from a botanical perspective. The main reason we visited was to see the silversword at Haleakala. We hiked out into the crater but you can see them easily from the parking lot at the summit. Upcountry is a wonderful tropical garden. Many farmers raising protea. Kula Botanical is great. If you hike - do sign up for a trip to Waikomoi Preserve. 'Iao Valley is a good introduction to ethnobotany of the islands. Enjoy!

    1. Marta, this is great information. I'd read about a protea farm in Maui Revealed; I definitely want to see it. Thanks for the endorsement of Kula Botanical Garden; it's high on my list now as well.

'Iao Valley looks phenomenal. So green! And we'll probably need all day to drive to Hana, I'll be stopping so often :-)

    1. It's been a dream of mine to go to Maui. Two big personal milestones this year were incentive enough to finally make it happen.

There *will be* lots and lots of pictures. Heck, I took 150 pictures at Ruth Bancroft Garden the other day, and I was only there for a couple of hours :-).
