Hammock heaven

In my mind, hammocks conjure up the ultimate in tropical relaxation. Lying on your back on what feels like a cushion of air, watching the clouds go by overhead, enjoying the gentle swaying motion from the wind—what could be better!

For years I’ve been trying to come up with a way to string a hammock between the bay trees in our back yard, but the spacing is just not right. Finally I have what I’ve always wanted: a freestanding hammock stand that is not only eminently practical, it’s also darn good looking. Yes, it takes up quite a bit of space (13 x 9 ft.) but it’s space that wasn’t much used anyway except to walk on.

The instructions were the Ikea type—no words, just pictures—and they didn’t accurately match the hardware that came in the box. Clearly, the hammock stand underwent a redesign after the instructions were printed. But thanks to my wife’s eagle eyes and sharp mind, we figured it all out and were soon able to enjoy the fruit of our labor.

With one fell swoop, our back yard looks a lot classier than it did previously!

  1. A little gurgling pot water feature, a mulch of those beautiful and pricey black round flat cobbles with a little pathway, and you'd have daily arguments over who naps here first. :-)

(not that those aren't happening already)

    What a beautiful piece!

    1. I can see it in my mind's eye!!! I desperately want a water feature but there's no electricity in that part of the yard. I was thinking of a solar pump but they're so wimpy.

Luckily, this is a 2-person hammock and the girls have been sharing it peacefully. My younger daughter even wanted to spend the night in the hammock.

    1. You should! It would be so perfect in your garden. I looked at different hammock stand designs, and the arc design I opted for was by far the most attractive.

    1. David, I got it from eBay. Look for "hammock stand arc." Mine had free shipping and was very reasonable compared to local outdoor furniture stores.
